Just parachuted into Danang – well not quite but the drive around the mountain before a rapid descent to the shore almost felt like it. On our two hour trip past rice fields and across rivers, we skirted Lang Co’s vanilla sandy beaches where village fishermen, standing in their boats, were making waves beating the water to drive fish into their nets. Out on the lagoon, rickety stilt bamboo huts provide overnight shelter to keep watch over their catch.
Starting the switch-back journey around the mountain, views alternate between sweeping valleys and coastal panoramas, the horizon a smudgy outline of sea and sky. A jolly golden Buddha grins at us from the car’s dashboard and a long tassel swings wildly from a chunk of amber as we zig-zag to avoid a herd of goats.
At the summit, Thra Thien Hue, the brick and concrete remnants of American bunkers are a popular tourist spot. Looking across to a sweeping yellow ribbon of sand far below, how enticing those golden beaches must have been to the troops during the ‘American War’ when Danang was R&R central.
We’re checking in for a bit of R&R ourselves at 217 Golden Flame Drive, part of Premier Village Danang Resort and while the beachfront pool and Nautica beach bar has a sprinkling of European singles and couples, this pool villa only development’s focus is on keeping the entire family satisfied.
Keeping it in the Family
We’ve stayed in rooms where you have to step over the suitcase to reach the bed and walk sideways to get into the bathroom but that’s not going to happen in our garden villa! Like most of the other 110 villas in this development, our two-bedroom ‘home-away-from-home’ has enough room for the extended family. Inter-generational holidays have become enormously popular particularly in SE Asia and in the reception area, three generations are checking in. If they’re Vietnamese, there’s probably a nanny or two in tow so space ranks highly when vacationing. Tennis court for dad – tick. Jet skis and surf toys for teenagers – tick. Spa and gym for mum – tick and a fully equipped kitchen for gran who loves to feed the family – tick. Our expansive open-plan lounge/dining zone opens out to gardens and a aquamarine private pool. The restful, neutral decor extends upstairs to a master bedroom cum sanctuary with super-comfy bed and broad balcony.
While younger kids enjoy recreational activities at the brilliant Kids’ Club with treasure hunts, quiz-to-learn book reading, and making sand-castles, parents can re-create some romance over lunch at the stylishly modern Ca Chuon Co – flying fish restaurant – where the local catch lands fresh on the menu daily. Overlooking pristine My An Beach listening to the waves rolling off the South East Sea, Danang has come a long way, baby, since the 1970s and judging by the development dollars pouring into huge beachfront blocks, it’s just the beginning…..
